News & Events - Co-Presidents' Report

Welcome back parents! We hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Spring Break this week. We are ready to hit the ground running this week beginning with the CRCT on Tuesday. Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will be testing through Thursday this week and Tuesday and Wednesday next week.
Your children have done everything they can to prepare for these tests academically. We simply ask that you ensure your children get plenty of rest and eat a hearty breakfast this week so that they are not only mentally but physically prepared for their tests.

Friday, our All Pro Dad program will begin at 6:45am. This is a terrific time for children and their dads to spend time together and enjoy breakfast. Thank you again to Robert Apple for continuing to support and coordinate these meetings throughout the year.
Illustrator Michael White will be back on Friday to dazzle our students! This will be a wonderful break from CRCT testing!

Have a great week,

Amy LeVasseur & Shari Wassell

News & Events - Co-Presidents' Report

As we enter April, we would like to take a moment to thank all of our volunteers and committee chairs for all their hard work for our big events in March. A big thank you to Maria Jacobs, Family Events Chair for planning not only our fabulous STEM night but also our Spring Family Dinner and Movie night. Both events were well attended and gave our students an opportunity to learn and have fun. Also, a great big thank you to our Book Fair Committee Chairs and volunteers Katie Frame and Jennifer Seitz for all their hard work and preparation of our very successful Spring book fair! We had a great turn out all week!

It is impossible for us to offer all of the wonderful events to our children without the tireless efforts of our fabulous volunteers, so from the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU for everything you do to make DES an amazing place to be!

We have a busy week leading up to Spring break starting on Tuesday with our Tiger Cub Round-up for kindergarten students who are zoned for our school next year. We will offer children and parents a sneak peek at our school and all we have to offer. Please remind your friends and neighbors that have kindergarteners coming to DES next year to attend this event.

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner!!!

Everyone wins at our Chick-fil-A spirit night on Tuesday from 5:00-8:00pm. Take the night off from cooking, enjoy a family meal out and support our school too! A portion of the profits for the evening goes right back to DES!

Wednesday is Walk to School day so lace up those shoes and join us outside for a wonderful brisk morning walk.

Finally, we would like to send our congratulations and best wishes to our wonderful Principal, Mrs. Jennifer Sanders who welcomed her son Henry this weekend and will be leaving for maternity leave after this week. Henry was born Saturday morning and both mom and baby are doing well. We wish you and your family all the best this Spring and Summer as you embark on a new journey with your precious little one and we look forward to seeing you again once school starts back in August!

Thank you Ms. Sanders for being such a wonderful leader and inspiration to our students. You will be missed!

We will not have a Tiger Talk issue on April 7th due to Spring Break but we will be back with you on April 14th just in time to remind you about our CRCT testing going on from April 16-19.

Have a great week and enjoy your Spring Break!

News & Events - Co-Presidents' Report

Thank you to those of you who came out to our brief PTO meeting on Thursday. In addition to the general PTO business (approval of minutes from January 31's meeting and a review of the PTO's finances to date), the Nominating Committee announced the slate for our 2013-2014 Executive Committee. The nominees are as follows:

PTO Co-President: Amanda Rountree
VP of Ways and Means: Amy Hatmaker
VP of Communications: Jan Jay
VP of Programs: Jennifer Fenmore
Secretary: Rosemary Gorham
Financial Secretary: Alison Woodrow
After our PTO meeting we had a wonderful family dinner and movie night! Thank you to all the families who came out and enjoyed a night with family and friends.
We also had a very successful Scholastic Book Fair last week. A huge thanks to all of you who participated and those who purchased books from teacher wish lists as well!!! We also want to acknowledge the many volunteers and chairs who spent their valuable free time helping our parents, teachers and students shop and find the perfect reading materials. You are all wonderful and we thank you!
The principal's coffee this week was very informative and we had a good turnout to hear about STEM certification and the processes that will lead to our school becoming a STEM certified school. It will take some time to put everything in place, but we are already beginning the process and gearing up to begin purchasing items to get us going.
The 5th grade enjoyed a wonderful field trip to the Little White House on Friday. Rich with history, this was a terrific learning trip for our students.
Coming up this Friday, March 29, we have a theme day - wear a souvenir shirt from a vacation, so go through those t-shirts and pick your favorite!
Have a great week,

We hope all of you have adjusted to Daylight Savings Time and to the new changes with carpool. We appreciate all of our parents who have been patient during this process.

We had a fabulous International Potluck event on Friday evening! We would like to thank the International Committee for their hard work and planning to make this annual event such a success. Families had the opportunity to taste dishes and delicacies from other countries and enjoyed a cultural program offered by our students showcasing talents and customs from around the world.

ATTENTION ALL BOOK WORMS:
Our Spring Book Fair kicks off next week, beginning on Wednesday and ending Friday! Don't miss your chance to pick up wonderful books for your children and support our school as well. The book fair will be open in the morning prior to class until 7:30am and again after school.

SPRING FAMILY DINNER:
Our Spring Fling is next Thursday, March 21st beginning at 6:00pm. If you have not done so already, please RSVP with the number of people in your family that will be attending so our Family Events Committee can plan.
PTO MEETING:
Just prior to the Spring Family dinner, we will have a brief PTO meeting at 5:30pm where our Nominating Committee will announce the slate for our 2013-2014 Executive Committee. All PTO members are welcome!

Have a wonderful week,

We had a very successful Mad Italian Spirit night last week. Thank you to all the families who took a night off from cooking and enjoyed a wonderful meal while supporting DES. Thank you to Ms. Fleury-Bell and our photography club for fantastic face painting!

Thank you to all the parents and students who braved the cold and the snow flurries to participate in Georgia Walk to School day on Wednesday. We had a decent turnout aside from the weather and look for greater participation in the warmer month of April! A great big Thank You goes out to all of our wonderful volunteers and to Rosemary Gorham for continuing to coordinate our Walk to School days.

Tuesday is our Chick-fil-A Spirit night from 5:00pm until 8:00pm. Take a break from cooking and enjoy a night out with your family. Remember that a portion of the profits for the evening go directly back to DES!

Friday will be filled with wonderful activities starting with the monthly All Pro Dad breakfast program at 6:45am. We welcome not only dads to these mornings, but granddads as well.

Make sure to leave room in your schedule for the fabulous International Potluck on Friday evening starting at 5:30 pm. Come and taste wonderful dishes from around the world and enjoy a cultural program given by our students. You won't want to miss this annual event sponsored by our International Committee.

On Saturday, March 16th from Noon until 6:00pm, head on over to The Great American Cookie Co. at Perimeter Mall to enjoy a sweet treat and another terrific Spirit Day. A portion of the profits will go back to DES.
Also, SPRING FORWARD! Did you remember to set your clocks last night? We lost an hour, so if you haven't yet, set your clocks forward an hour for Daylight Savings time and be ready for a dark morning tomorrow!

Enjoy your week!
