Environmental Instruction/Recycling

The members of this committee will work with the school and community to organize and maintain a recycling program. The committee will also develop new initiatives to teach the students about ways to “go green.”

Recycle your Pop Tops

Did you know that the Ronald McDonald House raised $27,000 last year by recycling pop tops off of aluminum cans? We are collecting the pop tops in our DES Recycling Center so collect them at home and drop them off at school and we'll see that they get back to the Ronald McDonald House.

This is one more way we can help teach our kids how recycling can help others.

We're Helping Save the Earth - One Bag at a Time

Our Recycling Center is set up inside the school next to the doors to the gymnasium. Students and parents can drop off their ink cartridges, batteries, paired shoes, pop tops, plastic bags, drink pouches, cell phones and plastic or aluminum containers at anytime.

Thanks for helping DES save the environment.

DES Recycling

Get Involved - Environmental Instruction/Recycling

The Recycling and Environment Committee was hard at work last semester implementing initiatives to make DES a greener school. We have begun by recycling paper in all of the classrooms as well as in the teacher workrooms. Plastic, glass, aluminum and tin can be recycled the teacher lunchrooms. The safety patrol volunteers have been an immense help with getting the recyclables collected for our weekly pickup.

In the lunchroom, the upper grade children are emptying their water bottles when they are finished and all of the plastic is recycled. We are also collecting empty Capri Sun and Honest Kids beverage pouches from all grade levels at lunch to be recycled. We have asked the children to dump food off of their trays when they finish lunch. The students stack the empty trays in order to reduce the number of garbage bags used. Mr. Brake, Plant Engineer, commented that he is beginning to see a difference!

We have created a Recycling Center in the Front Hall where cellphones, plastic bags, batteries, ink cartridges, and paired shoes are accepted daily. In January, a three day Shoe Drive is planned where you will be able to drop off your shoes in the carpool line. Please look for an announcement with dates to be published in Tiger Talk. Thus far, we have recycled over 40 cell phones and 91 pounds of paired shoes. We have only just begun so continue collecting and sending them in!

It is our endeavor to reduce the waste coming out of our building and to educate students about the importance of recycling and its impact on our environment. We thank all of the volunteers who have come out thus far and encourage anyone interested in helping us to contact Jan Jay at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
